I. ZERVAKIS

Georgios I. Zervakis (PhD) is Professor in Mycology, and Head at the Laboratory of General and Agricultural Microbiology in the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece (https://w1.aua.gr/efp/en/faculty/georgios-i-zervakis/).

His main research interests could be summarized as follows: diversity, ecology, molecular systematics and phylogeny of fungi with emphasis on Basidiomycota and Ascomycota; mushroom breeding (development of new high-performing hybrid strains) and cultivation (optimization of production methodologies), evaluation of nutritional/dietetic/functional properties of fungal biomass; bioconversion/detoxification of agro-industrial wastes, synthetic polymers and other environmental pollutants, and biodegradation of lignocellulosic residues through the use of selected microorganisms (e.g. white-rot fungi).

He has been the recipient of numerous competitive research grants (through open calls), serving either as project coordinator or scientific responsible for the partner involved. He is/was Editor (or member of the Editorial Board) in five international scientific journals, and he has authored/coauthored more than 130 papers published in international peer-reviewed scientific (SCI) journals (> 4800 citations, h-index: 43; Scopus).
